Humans of CP: Sarah May


In paying homage to Humans of New York, we decided that we would like to put our own spin on it. Working in the heart of Boston’s Innovation District, we are an established tech company who has never strayed from its founding principle and start-up mentality. We are scrappy, innovative, fun, and transformative. Our culture is a microcosm of what it means to work at a tech company.

It’s our passion for our work and our culture that became the foundation for Humans of CP. We want to use the this as a forum to talk to our peers within Customer Portfolios about what they do here, and what they like to do outside of work.

Today’s college graduates have it tougher than those from past generations. They are faced with societal pressure and looming loan payments and figuring out what it is exactly that they are passionate about. Yet despite these challenges, they are optimistic, hopeful, and looking to be change agents in the field of their choosing.

This week we’re talking to Sarah May, a 22-year-old graduate from Merrimack College. She started at Customer Portfolios shortly after graduating in 2016. Having grown up in neighboring Peabody, Massachusetts, she has lived in the Boston area her entire life. Today, we talked to her about her position within the company and learned a little bit more about her.

What do you do at Customer Portfolios?

I work closely with Katie Gardner, who is our Marketing Director as the Social Media and Content Marketing intern. I manage all of our social channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram). I also help Katie generate content for our blog on a weekly basis.

Who is your favorite superhero?

Batman for sure. My friend and I saw The Dark Knight Rises a total of 4 times in theatres and I can almost quote the entire second movie in the series. I also think that the Joker is really cool. I know he’s a villain and not a hero, but he’s a very interesting character and always fun to watch. 

What is the most challenging part of your job?

The most challenging was adapting to the business-to-business (B2B) landscape. Before starting at Customer Portfolios, I had primarily worked for companies that sold their products or services directly to consumers, whereas Customer Portfolios’ sells its products and services to other businesses. There are a lot of differences between the two, and the language used is very different as well.

If you could be one animal, what would you choose?

I would definitely choose to be a shark. They are so fascinating and powerful and they basically dominate the ocean. I would also get an entire week dedicated to me so that would be pretty cool, too. I recently got to hold a shark when I was in Mexico. It was a terrifying experience but also very exciting at the same time.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

It’s very cliché, but I would have to say my dad. He put himself through college by himself, then worked at a few different companies before opening his own business. I know he works incredibly hard, and I really admire how he stands up for himself and his business. He built it from the ground up and it’s very successful, which is something you don’t see too often given that the majority of small businesses fail.
