Humans of CP: Dianne Brennick

dianne-539848-edited-322310-edited.jpgThis month’s Humans of CP features our fearless captain, Dianne Brennick. As Culture and Operations Manager, Dianne has been running a tight ship since 2015. Today, we’re chatting with her to learn more about CP’s biggest cheerleader, and her interests outside our blue and orange walls.

What do you do at Customer Portfolios?

I like this word a friend’s mom used once, factotum. It means “a person having many diverse responsibilities”. My job has a lot of variety. I have a lot of HR and office management responsibilities like onboarding new employees, scheduling company meetings, and planning company outings, but sometimes I work as an Executive Assistant, and sometimes I even put on my event coordinator hat. I like to call myself the glue of the office.

What is one thing you’re glad you tried, but would never do again?

When I was about 27, I went cliff jumping into Lake Champlain in Vermont. There were a lot of people doing it, so I did it too. I like being able to say I tried it, but it was very scary and a stupid thing to do if you’re not a good diver. The only safeguard I had were two former Marines who knew how to swim well and knew First Aid. It was fun, but looking back, it was probably not a great idea.

What is something you like to do the old-fashioned way?

As much as I like texting and instant messenger for some things, I like picking up the phone or talking in- person much better. So much can be misinterpreted when communicating through instant messenger or text. I prefer to talk on the phone or face-to-face, so the meaning is much more clear. We used to have to deal with issues or questions by talking to people, why is there such a hesitation now?

Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?

I would like to swap places with someone like Bill Gates, Steven Hawking, or Elon Musk. I would like to experience how they come up with these crazy, amazing ideas, and find out where this intelligence comes from. How have they become so successful and, in my opinion, made such a positive impact on the world?

I have been following these guys a lot lately. Steven Hawking talks about Earth and how humans won’t be able to survive here, Bill Gates not only created Windows but also is currently doing amazing things with his wife and their money, especially improving global health through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. I would love to experience where those ideas come from.

What is the most important lesson you've learned in the past year?

There are three lessons that pop into my mind:

  • Patience – I feel like I get better at being more patient all the time, but situations always arise when I think, “Okay, this is where I need improvement.”
  • Not being too hard on myself, and trying to remember that no one’s perfect. I need to learn from my failures, and not necessarily be afraid of failure.
  • Asking for help – Sometimes I do really well delegating and not doing everything on my own, but other times I have a one-track mind and decide that it will be better if I do it myself.

What has been your biggest challenge at Customer Portfolios so far?

We are a small company with a lot of needs, so sometimes a big challenge is figuring out what really needs to get done. Sometimes it’s obvious, but other times it might be obvious to someone else, but I haven’t picked up on it yet. When that happens, I need to make sure it gets taken care of before it becomes a bigger issue. I like that I have a lot of variety in my work, but like everything, some days (and tasks) are more challenging than others!  

I’m always trying to improve the work-life balance at CP, so I’m trying to figure out what I can do to make life easier on the people that work here and help them complete their jobs properly and successfully. This is a fun and challenging part of my day to day!
